A classic overland Queensland journey through the legendary western towns, station country, Birdsville and the great Channel Country. Starting in Brisbane and finishing with a flight home from Longreach, this ten-day adventure takes in some of Australia's most remote and dramatically beautiful landscapes — from the braided red-earth rivers of the Channel Country and the iconic Birdsville Hotel to the dinosaur country of Winton and the pioneering heritage of Longreach. Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1 – Brisbane to Mitchell
Depart Brisbane via the Darling Downs and Chinchilla to Mitchell, our first night in Queensland's outback west.
Day 2 – Mitchell to Station Country
Travel into the west for an authentic farmstay or working station experience — local hospitality, station stories and a genuine taste of outback life.
Day 3 – To Windorah
Continue through the iconic Channel Country — a vast ancient floodplain of braided rivers and endless red earth — to the remote town of Windorah on the Cooper Creek.
Day 4 – Windorah to Birdsville
Travel the legendary outback track to Birdsville. As sunset approaches, we venture out toward the famous Big Red dune — Australia's most celebrated sand dune — where road and weather conditions allow.
Day 5 – Birdsville Discovery
Explore the iconic outback town at your own pace: the legendary Birdsville Hotel, the story of the Diamantina River and the local historical museum. An optional scenic flight delivers an extraordinary bird's-eye view of the desert landscape and Simpson Desert fringe.
Day 6 – Birdsville to Boulia
Travel north through the vast Channel Country to Boulia — home of the legendary Min Min lights, mysterious floating lights that have baffled outback travellers for generations. Local touring brings the town's unique history to life.
Day 7 – Boulia to Winton
Continue to Winton — birthplace of Qantas and Waltzing Matilda — a town steeped in Queensland legend, character and outback spirit.
Day 8 – Winton to Longreach
Visit the world-class Australian Age of Dinosaurs museum, perched dramatically above the mesa country, before continuing to Longreach — the heart of the Queensland outback.
Day 9 – Longreach Highlights
Explore the Qantas Founders Museum and the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame before a memorable Thomson River sunset experience — the outback sky reflected in the river below, campfire dinner under the stars.
Day 10 – Return to Brisbane
Fly from Longreach to Brisbane, arriving home with nine extraordinary outback nights behind you — and memories of landscapes, towns and people that stay with you for life.
